1. What Are the Differences Between the Sponge Used in Toddler Seats and Ordinary Furniture Sponges?

The safety standards for sponges used in toddler seats are far stricter than those for ordinary furniture sponges. Ordinary furniture sponges mainly focus on comfort and durability, while toddler seat sponges must meet the strict requirements for materials in contact with infants and young children, including the limit of harmful substances such as formaldehyde content, heavy metal precipitation, and azo dyes. In addition, the sponge for toddler seats usually needs to cooperate with the overall anti-collision structure of the seat to possess certain energy-absorbing and cushioning performance, which can assist in absorbing impact force during a collision, while ordinary furniture sponges have no such performance requirements. It is not allowed to directly replace the special-purpose sponge for toddler seats with ordinary sponges during selection and purchase.

2. Is the Odor of Seat Sponges a Quality Problem?

It is a normal phenomenon for newly manufactured toddler seat sponges to have a slight odor, because a small amount of volatile organic compounds will remain during the foaming process of the sponge, which will usually dissipate naturally after being placed in a ventilated environment for 3 to 7 days. However, if the odor is pungent, with a distinct chemical sour smell or a smell similar to burning plastic, it indicates that the sponge may use inferior raw materials or excessive additives. Such products carry the risk of releasing harmful substances and are not recommended for further use. After receiving the product, you can first air it in a ventilated place for a few days. If the odor is still strong, you should contact the after-sales service in time for handling.

3. Is the Flame Retardant Performance of Sponges Important for Toddler Seats?

Extremely important. If the sponge inside the toddler seat does not have flame retardant performance, it will burn rapidly once exposed to a fire source and release a large amount of toxic smoke, causing serious harm to children. The sponge of formal toddler seats should meet the flame retardant requirements of national standards, which can self-extinguish after contacting fire or burn at an extremely slow speed. However, it should be noted that the flame retardant performance will gradually decline with the aging of the sponge and repeated cleaning. In daily use, the seat should be kept away from open flames, heaters and other heat sources. If carbonization or hardening is found on the surface of the sponge, it indicates that the flame retardant layer may have failed, and it is recommended to replace the seat.

4. How to Judge Whether the Seat Sponge Contains Harmful Substances?

Ordinary consumers can hardly judge whether the sponge contains harmful substances with the naked eye, but they can conduct preliminary screening through the following methods: First, smell the odor. The stronger the pungent chemical smell, the greater the possibility that harmful substances exceed the standard. Second, observe the color. Sponges with overly bright colors or dull gray tones may be added with inferior dyes or recycled materials. Third, touch the texture. Inferior sponges have a rough feel and are prone to shedding debris, while high-quality sponges have a delicate surface and good resilience. The most reliable method is to check whether the product has passed authoritative certifications such as 3C Certification of China and EU CE Certification. Certified products usually have strict testing requirements for sponge materials.
